Instead of buying mining equipment, the perpetrator embezzled a large sum of money

In Moscow, a man asked his acquaintance to lend him 17 million to buy mining equipment cryptocurrency. Having transferred the required amount, the victim never saw either the fraudster no the money.

About the incident told the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. The man, who asked for a loan, confirmed the intention to return the money, writing two receipts. However, after the period of repayment has expired, and the attacker did not get in touch, the victim wrote a statement to the police.

The suspect was detained and confessed during interrogation that he asked for 17 million to repay his debts. He now faces up to 10 years on the article “Fraud.”

Crimes related to crypto-assets happen quite often. In Irkutsk, the victim lost 2 million rubles, and a pensioner from Kemerovo parted with 1.8 million. Both victims transferred funds after the phone fraudsters called with the proposal to increase income by investing in cryptocurrencies.

The reason why victims are so easily deceived is the belief that they can get a quick income. According to the Harris Poll Thought Leadership Practice, over 70% of respondents believe that investing in cryptocurrency can make them billionaires.
