Historic Bitcoin Halving Satoshi Sells for Over $2 Million in Auction

The cryptocurrency world witnessed a historic event with the auction of the 1,968,750,000,000,000th satoshi, marking the first satoshi of Bitcoin’s fourth halving. This landmark auction, hosted by CoinEx in collaboration with ViaBTC, was aptly named the “Epic Satoshi Auction.” The auction began with an initial bid of 1 BTC and has seen fervent activity, with the highest bid soaring to 33.3 BTC, approximately $2 140 000, according to Ultramining.

This particular satoshi, one of only four “Rare Satoshis” in the Bitcoin ecosystem, represents a significant piece of crypto history. It is part of a block identified as containing a “Rare Satoshi” due to its position in the sequence marked by Bitcoin’s fourth halving. The Ordinals protocol assigns each satoshi a unique number based on the timestamp it was mined, enhancing its traceability and value as a collectible.

The auction underscores the growing interest in collectibles within the cryptocurrency community, highlighting the intrinsic value and scarcity of these unique digital assets. CoinEx and ViaBTC have successfully drawn attention to the innovative ways to celebrate Bitcoin’s legacy and the contributions of its anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

As the bidding war heated up, numerous participants placed their bids, with the second-highest bid reaching 20 BTC. The auction concluded on April 25, 2024, at 16:00 UTC, leaving a lasting impact on the collectibles market within the crypto space.
