Massive Underground Crypto Mining Operation Busted in Novosibirsk

In one of the largest crackdowns on illegal cryptocurrency mining in Russia, Novosibirsk police have dismantled a vast network of underground mining farms, leading to the arrest of a significant operator in the industry. The detained individual, a 35-year-old resident of the Kalininsky district, was found to have stolen electricity worth approximately 190 million rubles to power several mining farms.  according to Bits.media.

The operation was brought to light after local power engineers reported an unusual overload in the power grid. Investigations revealed that the miner had collaborated with a 39-year-old employee of a regional electric company, who facilitated illegal connections to high-voltage power lines, significantly damaging the energy infrastructure.

During raids supported by Rosgvardiya forces, authorities seized around five thousand mining devices from various concealed locations, including areas near sewage treatment facilities and a landfill. The farms were not only hidden in forest areas but also cleverly placed in the private sector, complicating the detection and seizure efforts.

Legal proceedings are underway, with charges laid under Articles 165, 290, and 291 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, addressing the severe implications of the offenses. While the primary suspect has been taken into custody, his accomplice from the energy company has been released on a signature bond, pending further investigation.
