More than half of the BTC blockchain hashrate is controlled by two pools

52% of the first cryptocurrency’s blockchain hashrate is under the control of two mining pools, giving them the ability to produce a 51% attack.

According to data provided by Mempool, 34.03% of the computing power belongs to Foundry USA, and 17.97% belongs to China’s Antpool.

In 2021, Foundry managed to take the lead in bitcoin hash rate with about 17%. The pool proved popular with users, allowing it to double its share.

As for Antpool, the site lost first place and many miners due to the pressure from the authorities on the crypto industry. As a result, the pool ended up on the second line.

The challenging year of 2022 was marked by a high consolidation of the computing power of the largest mining platforms. If at the beginning of the year, the top five sites controlled only 60% of the total hash rate, then at the end of the year the figure rose to 80%.

Such a significant increase was possible due to favorable mining conditions and competent server placement.
