Kazakh authorities introduced a progressive scale of tariffs for cryptocurrency mining

In 2023, miners in Kazakhstan will work at higher rates. If the surcharge, which was adopted in the summer, was 1 tenge per 1 kWh, now its size may increase by 25 times.

The value of the final rate depends on the energy source used. This method of calculating payments is based on a legislative act signed by the president.

The base rate is the amount of electricity that was used during the reporting period. The lowest rates are provided for mining farms that use “green” energy. However, in this case, the low cost of electricity is compensated by higher tax rates, which can reach 25 tenges per kWh.

The reason for the significant growth of cryptocurrency mining in the country was the mass relocation of miners from China. It is they who are accused of the fact that there is a shortage of electricity in the country. In this regard, the authorities struggle against illegal mining.

The draft law, which was adopted in Kazakhstan in December, also makes miners buy back surplus electricity under state control.
