Samsung’s 3nm Tech Powers MicroBT’s Crypto Miner, Marking Commercial Leap for GAA Process

TechInsights, a semiconductor research firm, has found Samsung’s 3nm GAA process in a MicroBT crypto miner ASIC. This discovery signals the first commercial use of the GAA technology.

This technology is significant as it enables the scaling of transistors to 2nm and beyond. This can boost performance, increase energy efficiency, and pave the way for advanced applications.

Samsung, as the foundry for MicroBT, is leveraging the 3nm GAA process. However, as per Eric Chen from DIGITIMES Research, Samsung’s 3nm GAA production capacity remains low. Despite this, commercial success is within reach.

John Wang, another DIGITIMES analyst, explained Samsung’s tactic. To improve yield, Samsung is attracting as many customers as possible, including the Chinese manufacturer.

Despite its manufacturability, the 3nm process may not have attained a yield generating commercial value for the foundry. Nevertheless, Samsung’s 3nm process promises to reduce power consumption by 45%, improve performance by 23%, and decrease chip area by 16% against 5nm technology. These advances lay the groundwork for future developments.
