ViaBTC Takes Over Majority of Zcash Hashrate, Triggering Security Alarms and Calls for Innovation

Alarm bells are ringing in the cryptocurrency world as ViaBTC now controls 53.69% of the Zcash hashrate. As of September 19, 2023, ViaBTC dominates with 4.2 GSol/s out of the total 7.84 GSol/s hashrate. This significant concentration poses a real threat to the decentralized nature of the network, according to cryptonomist.

In an immediate response, Coinbase took robust action to protect its users. The major crypto exchange moved Zcash markets to a “limits-only state” and increased confirmation requirements to 110 blocks. Consequently, the deposit time rose from about 40 minutes to 2.5 hours. These changes aim to reduce risks such as duplicate charges and fraudulent transactions.

Electric Coin Co. (ECC), the group responsible for Zcash’s codebase, is deeply concerned. They’ve initiated discussions with ViaBTC, Coinbase, and other key stakeholders to find a solution. ECC identifies the main issue as the “lack of purpose,” which leaves the network vulnerable to attacks like double spending.

To combat this, ECC has proposed an innovative Trailing Finality Layer (TFL). This layer aims to add finality to transactions, thus bolstering security. Furthermore, ECC is exploring a transition to a proof-of-stake (PoS) system. The hybrid PoW-PoS approach is now among ECC’s top four priorities. A prototype TFL is under development to assess its practicality.

Community involvement is crucial as ECC navigates these challenges. Decisions about Zcash’s future must be collective, taking into account diverse perspectives within the ecosystem. The lack of a single “main developer” or “issuer” for Zcash underlines the importance of a communal approach.

ViaBTC’s dominance doesn’t just pose an immediate issue; it also creates an opportunity for evolution. As ECC works on TFL and PoS, they will have to overcome technical barriers. Yet these hurdles are essential for enhancing the security and decentralization of not just Zcash but also the broader crypto landscape.

In summary, the majority control of Zcash’s hashrate by ViaBTC is causing an industry-wide ripple effect. Actions by Coinbase and proposals from ECC demonstrate an immediate and earnest effort to address these risks. These developments signify a critical moment for Zcash and a learning opportunity for the whole crypto community. As ECC continues its work, the coming months will be pivotal in shaping the future of decentralization and network security in cryptocurrencies.
