US Bitcoin Miners Prepare for Severe Winter Storm

Bitcoin miners in the United States are preparing for a severe winter storm expected to impact southern regions. Forecasts predict heavy snow, ice, and potential power outages. Under such conditions, mining companies often reduce operations to ease pressure on power grids.
According to AccuWeather, the storm system may stretch nearly 1,800 miles. It could affect areas from western Texas to the mid-Atlantic coast. More than a dozen states may experience disruptions, impacting up to 60 million people.

Why Bitcoin miners curtail operations during storms
During previous extreme weather events, Bitcoin miners have powered down equipment to support grid stability. In 2022, Texas miners voluntarily curtailed activity during a major winter storm. This helped prevent further strain on the electricity network.
ESG researcher Daniel Batten notes that this role will expand. As renewable energy sources grow, flexible demand becomes essential. Bitcoin mining provides that flexibility through rapid load management.
Mining facilities can:
- absorb excess power during low demand;
- shut down quickly when supply tightens;
- stabilize grids during peak stress.
Bitcoin mining and grid stability in Texas
A recent report from the Digital Assets Research Institute suggests Bitcoin mining saved Texas roughly $18 billion. Savings came from avoiding the construction of new gas peaker plants. As a result, mining has become part of the state’s demand response strategy.
Bitdeer response and industry readiness
Singapore-based miner Bitdeer operates more than 293,000 rigs globally. The company does not expect major disruptions from the storm. Representatives say sites follow seasonal procedures, including winterization and continuous monitoring.
Texas grid operator ERCOT classifies Bitcoin miners as large flexible loads. Unlike traditional industries, miners can quickly reduce power usage. Bitdeer stated it is ready to support the grid if supply constraints arise.
United States leads global Bitcoin hashrate
The United States controls nearly 38% of global Bitcoin hashrate, according to Hashrate Index. The country hosts over 130 mining facilities. The largest concentrations are located in Texas, Georgia, and New York. Major US miners include Marathon Digital Holdings and Riot Platforms.
