Tether and Adecoagro launch mining with surplus renewable energy

Tether, the digital asset company behind the largest stablecoin USDT, has announced a strategic partnership with South American agribusiness firm Adecoagro to launch a bitcoin mining pilot project in Brazil. The initiative will use Adecoagro’s surplus renewable energy to power mining facilities and could add BTC to Adecoagro’s balance sheet in the future.

Details on the partnership and future plans

Adecoagro, in which Tether owns a 70% stake, has 230 megawatts of power generation capacity in South America and operates sugar mills, rice farms, and dairy facilities. According to Adecoagro CEO Mariano Bosch, the project will allow the company to stabilize energy prices from the spot market and benefit from bitcoin’s price potential.

Tether is also developing Tether Mining OS, a mining operating system planned to be open-sourced in the coming months. At the Bitcoin 2025 conference in May, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company has invested $2 billion in energy and mining and aims to become the world’s largest bitcoin miner by year-end.
