Aisen Nikolaev: Separate Power Plants for Mining, No Access to Main Grid
The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, advocates launching dedicated energy facilities solely for mining. He argues this step would protect local grids from overloads caused by large crypto farms tapping into public lines. The proposal is expected to be reviewed by the State Council’s Energy Commission in the near future.
Regional authorities report an annual 25–30% increase in mining capacity. Existing generation frequently lags in accommodating sudden load spikes, leading to uneven power distribution and resident complaints. Nikolaev’s concept involves letting private operators purchase electricity at commercial rates but away from the main network.
Such a strategy enables local communities to maintain stable power for everyday consumers while not outlawing the mining industry outright. Experts believe implementation could take two to three years and be particularly relevant for the Far Eastern areas.
