Malicious USB Cables Enable Hidden Mining: Latest Data and Fraud Tactics
According to Habr, certain online marketplaces have listed USB cables preloaded with hidden scripts capable of surreptitiously mining cryptocurrency and stealing users’ credentials. Experts received at least 7k complaints in the last two months. Some products pose as branded charging accessories, deceiving unsuspecting buyers.
Statistics indicate that up to 18% of these cables carry modules designed to stealthily initiate mining processes, increasing power consumption and overloading systems. On average, victims incur losses of around $20k under large-scale attacks. Additionally, sensitive information often ends up in the hands of scammers for blackmail or other illicit use.
Security specialists advise verifying product certifications, checking reviews, and avoiding suspicious cables with personal computers. Retailers have reportedly pulled about 3.2k listings from sale, yet analysts believe the true extent of this issue remains unclear.
