Analysts: Iran’s underground mining may reach 800 MW

Iranian grid operator Tavanir estimates that unlicensed mining sites collectively draw about 800 MW, equivalent to powering a large city. Such heavy usage has prompted authorities to implement severe enforcement measures. Special teams conduct raids on hidden warehouses filled with ASIC rigs.

These operations mainly target farms that either evade higher electricity fees or tap into power lines unlawfully. The government encourages citizens to report suspicious activities by offering cash rewards. Over 13,000 rigs have recently been seized and destroyed, temporarily reducing the system’s strain.

Despite these steps, a noticeable trend sees illegal miners moving to remote provinces with weaker oversight. Officials argue for continuous monitoring, warning that any discovered violations lead to asset confiscation and steep fines, especially given the social impact of widespread blackouts.
