Transnistria Revokes Blockchain Law Amid Energy Crisis

Transnistrian authorities have officially rescinded the 2018 “Law on the Development of Information Blockchain Technologies.” The move is attributed to preserving regional energy security amid a gas shortage. Officials say the production of digital currencies demands substantial power, and prioritizing stable heating and electricity services is paramount.

Since 2022, gas inflows have been fluctuating downward, and the overall energy balance has fallen by around 15%. Economists warn that abandoning blockchain initiatives might undermine foreign investment, but it will likely prevent major electricity disruptions. The region had previously contemplated expanding crypto exchanges and mining farms, though current realities forced a strategic shift.

Experts suggest that the topic could be revisited if economic conditions improve. For now, the focus remains on safeguarding public utilities and minimizing the risk of blackouts.
