Customs in Sukhumi seizes 90 mining devices: clampdown on illegal crypto extraction

In Sukhumi, State Customs Committee officials discovered and seized 90 cryptocurrency mining devices. Stored in a basement space within a residential building, the equipment was not connected to the grid but was nonetheless prohibited from import and operation in the republic. According to official statements, an administrative case has already been initiated against the owner.

Abkhazia extended its ban on mining until the end of 2026, citing an aging power network that cannot sustain such heavy usage. Additional restrictions aim to curb frequent blackouts and infrastructure failures. Experts highlight that even a few dozen machines can exert a substantial load on local electric grids.

Previously, the authorities launched multiple campaigns to shut down illegal mining facilities, yet recent data on seizures indicate that certain groups continue to bring in unauthorized hardware. The confiscated rigs will be stored pending further investigation, and if the owner is found culpable, the devices are likely to be destroyed.
