Proposal for Mining Hardware Registry Sparks Debate in State Duma
Russia’s Ministry of Energy has suggested creating a centralized registry for crypto mining equipment to simplify the crackdown on illegal farms. Reports indicate up to 70% of existing devices might be registered, potentially tracking large-scale owners and verifying their compliance with electricity rates and licenses.
However, some State Duma members, including Anton Gorelkin, question this measure’s effectiveness. They emphasize that monitoring hardware alone won’t curb illegal consumption without thorough energy audits. Energy experts note that certain regions experience load spikes up to 20%, posing serious risks to local grids.
Opponents argue that collecting hardware data could burden legitimate miners. Instead, legislators propose stricter enforcement of electricity usage and tighter rules for operations that conceal true mining volumes.
