700 MW: can Krasnoyarsk handle the extra load
Power sector experts warn that the surge in demand caused by incoming Irkutsk miners could reach 700 MW. Without immediate measures to upgrade grids and expand generation, the region risks rolling blackouts. Currently, Krasnoyarsk’s power system experiences a 12–15% capacity shortfall during peak hours.
Rough estimates indicate that a large-scale overhaul of transmission lines and the construction of additional distribution hubs may cost $200 mln, with some funding likely required from the federal budget. Nevertheless, the local tariff remains enticing to miners used to even lower rates in Irkutsk.
Residents are concerned: power outages and voltage spikes are on the rise, particularly in industrial zones. Regulators say they are monitoring the situation closely. If consumption continues to grow, authorities might impose a temporary ban on new mining operations.
