Abkhazia Expects 327 Million kWh of Russian Power by Late February to Avert Crisis

Abkhazian authorities have revealed plans to secure 327 million kWh of electricity from Russia by the end of February. This amount should partly offset the shortage caused by a roughly 15% increase in consumption. Officials note that the lack of capacity is most pronounced during winter, when low reservoir levels diminish hydropower generation.

In 2024, official data showed Abkhazia was short by about 250 million kWh, prompting scheduled power cuts. Some districts still face supply disruptions of 3–4 hours a day. Government officials believe that 327 million kWh will help bridge the gap until the end of February.

Experts emphasize that this approach is a temporary fix, and modernizing the republic’s energy infrastructure requires a more holistic strategy. Abkhazia’s Ministry of Economy is exploring the construction of additional transmission lines and implementing storage technologies to reduce reliance on external power in the medium term.
