Schools in Abkhazia Left in the Dark While Miners Run Undisturbed

In recent weeks, regular power outages in Abkhazia’s schools and public institutions have disrupted classes and reduced working hours. Meanwhile, covert mining farms enjoy near-continuous electricity, defying the nationwide shortage. Experts estimate that around $10 млн in annual government spending is diverted to cover system losses caused by illegal miners.

Some areas suffer acutely: certain villages face 4–5-hour daily blackouts. Parents and teachers worry about educational quality, as lessons must occur by candlelight or be rescheduled, limiting learning opportunities. Meanwhile, miners receiving electricity unimpeded creates a sense of unfairness among citizens.

Abkhaz authorities consider stricter penalties and equipment seizures. If even part of the illegally consumed energy is reclaimed, outages could decrease by 20–30%. Yet, without a comprehensive solution—legal frameworks and technical oversight—no significant improvement seems likely in the coming months.
