Bitcoin Mining Revenue Funds 50% Salary Increase for Bhutan’s Public Servants

In 2023, the government of Bhutan implemented a 50% salary increase for public servants, funded by revenues from bitcoin mining. This move was made possible due to the state’s active involvement in cryptocurrency mining, which generates significant income.

Local media reports indicate that Bhutan holds over $886 million in bitcoin reserves, accounting for 26.9% of the country’s GDP. The state-owned Druk Holding and Investments is actively mining bitcoin, positively impacting the national economy.

Using mining revenues for social welfare demonstrates the potential of cryptocurrencies in developing national economies and improving citizens’ well-being.
