Proposal for bitcoin salaries: SB325 bill in Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, Senator Dusty Devers’ initiative to allow salaries to be paid in bitcoin is gaining momentum. The SB325 bill, debated for 2 months, would enable employees to receive their wages in digital currency if they so choose. According to the state’s finance committee, Oklahoma currently has a population of over 4.1 million, with roughly 2% already holding various cryptocurrencies.

Notably, annual in-state financial transfers exceed $12 bn, and some could shift into the “bitcoin segment” if the new legislation is approved. Experts highlight potential simplification of cross-border payments, enhanced financial literacy, and reduced transaction fees. However, local banks are concerned about price volatility and potential conversion issues.

Senator Devers believes that legalizing BTC payroll will attract innovative companies and boost the growth of blockchain technology in the region. Critics point to a lack of a clear taxation mechanism and the risk for those unfamiliar with cryptocurrencies. The final hearing on SB325 in the state senate is scheduled for early Q2.
