Researchers Warn Data Centers Could Consume All Global Electricity by 2033
Researchers from Loughborough University have stated that by 2033, data centers could consume the world’s entire electricity supply. Such a development could lead to a “digital apocalypse” if measures are not taken to optimize energy consumption.
According to the scientists, data centers already consume more electricity than the UK. 65% of stored data is “dark data” — used only once and then forgotten, yet continuing to consume resources.
Experts suggest deleting unnecessary data and creating more energy-efficient data centers to prevent a potential energy crisis and ensure a sustainable digital future.
