British Man Plans to Buy Landfill to Recover Lost Bitcoin Hard Drive
The famous story of the British man who accidentally discarded a hard drive containing a large Bitcoin fortune now has a new twist. He revealed his plan to purchase a portion of the local dump site so he can personally conduct the search. According to experts, the total cryptocurrency holdings on that drive may exceed $500 mln.
The Newport City Council has rejected his excavation requests nine times, citing environmental risks and high financial costs. However, the miner remains confident that he can secure private funding, hire professional crews, and carry out the recovery with minimal ecological impact. He has even promised to donate 25% of any recovered amount to charity.
Waste management experts call such an operation extremely challenging, as landfill volume has grown by more than 70% over the past decade. The intended search involves the use of drone technology and ground-penetrating radar. If the hard drive is found, it would be one of the biggest cryptocurrency recovery stories to date.
