Total Ban on Crypto Mining Looms in Power-Scarce Areas of Irkutsk Region

Government leaders in the Irkutsk region are considering a complete prohibition on cryptocurrency mining in areas suffering from limited electrical capacity. Media Talk reports that officials blame significant grid overload for prompting this strict measure. Authorities note instances of voltage dips exceeding 15% below acceptable levels during peak consumption hours, posing risks to stable supply.

Official data shows Irkutsk ranks among the top regions for small-scale mining farms, especially those set up in private residences. The debate is expected to continue for two months, during which time policymakers will examine legal frameworks and design compensation programs for law-abiding consumers affected by any new restrictions.

Local power companies emphasize that such a ban could free up as much as 200 MW for essential community services. Nonetheless, analysts warn of potential backlash from certain mining groups, some of which plan to relocate their operations to unaffected districts if the ban proceeds.
