Abkhazia cancels six-hour power cuts: impact on mining activity
Abkhazia has officially ended the six-hour rolling blackouts imposed due to a severe electricity shortage. According to “Chernomorenergo,” the power system is returning to normal, though experts remain concerned about potential overloads. Observers widely suspect that the crisis was partly caused by unchecked miners tapping into local grids without proper limits.
Mining is prohibited in the republic until late 2026, yet some individuals continue to operate illegal rigs. Authorities secured an additional 327 million kWh from Russia to alleviate the acute energy deficit. The budget is covering these imports, and potential adjustments may occur as needed.
Residents view the improved power situation favorably, as frequent outages disrupted businesses and daily life. Local officials, however, call for stricter enforcement against illegal mining to prevent future large-scale shortages. Any new farms must receive official approval and avoid putting undue strain on the network.
