Abkhaz Opposition Demands Free Electricity for Crypto Mining, Opposes Russian Bases

In Abkhazia, controversy is growing over mining: some opposition factions advocate for free power to promote cryptocurrency extraction. Concurrently, they oppose Russian military installations, arguing that such presence hinders forging broader economic ties. Supporters believe cost-free mining could be a significant driver of local prosperity.

However, experts warn of severe risks to the grid. In 2024 alone, the region saw more than 15 outages, most linked to unlicensed mining sites. Nearly half of Abkhazia’s consumed electricity is already subsidized, so increased load may lead to shortages.

Critics say providing free energy without proper infrastructure upgrades could exacerbate supply problems. Large protests are anticipated soon, featuring opposition activists and supporters of Russia’s military presence, adding political tension to the ongoing debate.
