Iran Tightens Penalties: Three-Month Cutoff for First-Time Mining, One-Year Ban for Repeat Offenders
Iranian authorities have released new information confirming their extremely tough stance against illegal cryptocurrency mining. Those caught mining without authorization for the first time face a three-month power disconnection. A second offense carries even harsher consequences: a one-year suspension from electricity, gas, and fuel services.
Local experts note that these measures were prompted by mounting complaints about voltage fluctuations and increased strain on the power grid. Over the past six months, 25 severe overload incidents led to short-term outages and public dissatisfaction. In some areas, transformer malfunction rates reportedly rose by 40 percent. Consequently, the Iranian government decided to take a strict approach to safeguard energy resources and ensure stable delivery.
Nevertheless, some analysts believe that such radical regulation might drive crypto miners to adopt more clandestine operations. As a result, only a fraction of actual mining could be detected by authorities, leaving the majority of rigs running outside official oversight.
