Buryatia Plans to Ban Cryptocurrency Mining During Peak Periods Starting December 1

Authorities in the Republic of Buryatia have announced plans to impose a ban on cryptocurrency mining from December 1, 2024, to March 15, 2025. The restrictions are linked to increased energy consumption during the winter season, when the load on the power grid reaches its peak.

The ban will be enforced annually during peak seasons until 2031. Government representatives state that these measures are necessary to ensure stable electricity supply for residents and businesses. Mining adds extra load to the grid, potentially leading to power outages and emergency situations.

Experts note that Buryatia has seen a rise in the number of mining farms consuming up to 100 MW. Implementing temporary restrictions will reduce risks to the energy system and ensure reliable operation during critical periods. Miners are encouraged to relocate their equipment to regions with surplus energy.
