Oil and Gas Forum in Yamal: Associated Gas Proposed for Crypto Mining

At a recent oil and gas forum in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, a group of experts recommended implementing crypto mining directly on fields where associated gas is available. According to organizers, this practice could cut resource flaring by over 40%. Conference participants argue that such an approach improves profitability and helps streamline energy usage.

Data from the Ministry of Natural Resources shows that hundreds of millions of cubic meters of associated petroleum gas are burned off yearly in the region. Experts estimate that, if utilized properly, this volume could supply around 15–20 MW of electricity for data centers and mining operations. During a panel discussion, it was stated that investment in these initiatives could reach $60 mln within the next two to three years.

However, project critics question the stability of the crypto market and highlight substantial costs related to infrastructure and transport. Even so, event organizers remain optimistic, believing that government and private collaboration can tap into the region’s vast energy potential without harming the local environment.
