Newport Council Denied Miner Permission Ten Times to Search for $750 Million Bitcoin Disk
British miner from Newport, James Howells, has been denied permission by the city council ten times in his attempt to find a hard drive with bitcoins worth $750 million in the city landfill. The disk was accidentally thrown away by his ex-girlfriend in 2013.
Howells offers authorities a quarter of the recovered funds for city development, but despite this, he is not granted permission to excavate due to environmental concerns. He claims to know the exact location of the disk and is ready to conduct the search without harming the environment.
In December, he plans to file a £500 million lawsuit if not allowed to begin the search. Howells’ case has become one of the most famous in the cryptocurrency world, drawing attention to the issues of digital asset storage.
