Iran destroys 13,000 mining rigs to prevent power grid overload

Iran’s authorities have announced the dismantling of 13,000 cryptocurrency mining devices that were operating without proper authorization. According to Tavanir, illicit miners heavily strained the power grid, causing outages in various cities. The equipment was seized from unregulated workshops and vacant buildings throughout the country.

The crackdown is part of Iran’s efforts to regulate volatile energy loads, especially during peak consumption periods. Analysts estimate more than 800 MW might be linked to unregistered mining, posing serious risks to the entire electrical infrastructure. Teams tasked with locating these underground farms work alongside local agencies, offering bounties for information from the public.

Tavanir representatives stress that unlicensed rigs will be destroyed by court order to secure the domestic power market against further violations. Some officials also suspect foreign entities of aiding illegal miners in circumventing sanctions.
