Gridless and Mini-Hydro Bring Cheap Power to 15,000 in Zambia
In Zambia, Gridless and Zengamina Hydro Power channel surplus capacity into Bitcoin mining. According to the BBC, BTC revenues help subsidize electricity for 15,000 local residents. The station generates about 1.2 GWh per month, half of which previously went unused.
Through this partnership, average electricity fees have dropped by 15%, while local grid investment rose by $8 mln. Plans now include boosting generation by 25% by 2026 and expanding services to remote zones. Neighboring areas are taking note, exploring the same approach of selling “excess” power to miners.
Experts regard such models as a forward-thinking route for green energy development, offering an extra revenue stream and broader electricity access in rural regions.
