Greenidge Generation in Court Battle Over Bitcoin Mining Facility in Yates County
Greenidge Generation LLC is engaged in a legal battle that will decide the fate of its bitcoin mining facility in Yates County, New York. After the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation ordered the facility to shut down in 2022, the company appealed the decision.
The facility, located on the shores of Seneca Lake, uses a former coal power plant converted to natural gas. Authorities have expressed concerns over environmental impacts, including emissions and heating of the lake.
Closing arguments in the case are scheduled for October 31. If the court rules against Greenidge, the company will have to cease operations by the end of the month, putting 45 high-paying jobs at risk.
