Dagestan’s Karabudakhkent District Recorded 38 Cases of Electricity Theft Tied to Mining in 2024
In Dagestan’s Karabudakhkent district, 38 instances of electricity theft linked to mining farms were uncovered in 2024 alone. Local officials report this figure accounts for about 13% of all power consumption violations. Some offenders reportedly tapped into concealed connections to transformers and substations, causing significant peak loads.
Earlier, authorities in the same area seized over 3000 mining devices, highlighting the scale of the issue. Compared to 2023, similar violations rose by 40%. Experts estimate the damage to utility companies at no less than $1,2 млн for the past year.
Regional power suppliers, working with law enforcement, continue to carry out surprise inspections, focusing on remote communities. Observers believe the introduction of smart metering systems and stricter penalties could eventually reduce electricity theft and lessen supply disruptions for honest consumers.
