2.9 GW Energy Deficit by 2030: Crypto Mining Pressures Irkutsk Region
Authorities in the Irkutsk region predict an electricity shortfall reaching 2.9 GW by 2030. Officials attribute this mainly to accelerated crypto mining growth, which increasingly strains local grids. Over the past three years, total power demands from mining farms soared by more than 28%, according to official figures.
Several emerging projects seeking grid connections have been denied due to near-capacity usage. Regional leaders are considering limiting or suspending additional power allocations for mining facilities. Experts warn that without prompt intervention, local infrastructure could face supply interruptions.
Another topic under review is the possibility of introducing special tariffs for miners. Analysts suggest this approach might encourage operators to relocate to surplus-generation areas or adopt alternative energy resources.
