Claim of Quantum Computer Breaking Bank Encryption Disputed: Only 22-Bit Key Cracked

A team from Shanghai University asserted they had used quantum computing to breach advanced encryption standards relied upon by the banking industry. Further review revealed, however, that their device only managed to factorize a 22-bit key. Investigations into the published materials unveiled that the researchers initially overstated their results.

Classical high-performance machines have already handled such minimal keys without issue. The announcement triggered intense debate, raising alarm that the quantum era might render well-established cryptographic protocols obsolete. Nonetheless, the deeper analysis confirmed that 2048- and 4096-bit systems remain unaffected by these claims.

Skeptics point out that billions of qubits would be necessary to compromise mainstream banking encryption. Current quantum processors are far less powerful. Although the threat may not be as imminent as suggested, experts stress that the progress of quantum technology necessitates continuous updates to cryptographic standards.
