Irkutsk Region Proposes Extended Crypto Mining Ban Until 2031 Due to Energy Shortages

In the southern part of Russia’s Irkutsk Region, officials are considering a full-scale ban on cryptocurrency mining, which could potentially affect about 650 MW of existing data centers. According to Kommersant, the regional governor has asked the president to introduce year-round restrictions on all types of miners. These measures would remain in place until 2031, with the key concern being the area’s limited energy capacity and the strain on local infrastructure.
Previously, the Irkutsk Region implemented a seasonal ban on mining during the autumn and winter months to help mitigate peak electricity consumption. However, the latest proposal calls for even stricter measures, possibly including the mandatory transfer of capacities from disconnected consumers. Local authorities argue that such a comprehensive approach is necessary to free up resources for socially significant projects.
Analysts warn that this plan could create a “no-win situation” for mining operators who have already invested heavily in hardware and facilities. Yet, regional officials emphasize their primary goal is to maintain a stable power supply. As a result, industry observers anticipate further negotiations between federal agencies and crypto market participants to balance the economic benefits of mining with the region’s energy security.
