Arkansas Rejects Proposal to Restrict Mining Near Military Facilities

Arkansas legislators have voted down a bill that would have banned cryptocurrency mining within 30 miles of military bases. The Cool Down reports proponents warned of espionage risks and potential infrastructure vulnerabilities. Despite these concerns, the majority concluded the state “lacks sufficient resources” for stringent controls.

The initiative followed a Texas incident in which foreign-owned mining operations were discovered close to a military site. Arkansas lawmakers, however, argued that imposing new constraints might deter tech investors, given the state’s interest in nurturing digital ventures.

Opponents of the ban advocate more nuanced background checks rather than a blanket prohibition on mining farms. It remains unclear whether the sponsor will reintroduce the measure, though some in the public expressed dissatisfaction with the legislature’s decision.
