Seasonal Tariffs: Cracking Down on Illegal Mining
Effective 2025, Russia’s government authorized regions to impose a 1.8 electricity rate multiplier during the heating season. This policy targets clandestine operators consuming large power volumes for mining. Officials believe it will weed out unlawful players and reduce grid strain.
In Irkutsk Region, which partly implemented similar measures, home miners found it unprofitable to exceed certain limits. Nonetheless, some switched to alternate sites to keep mining going.
Authorities expect the extra cost burden will push miners to legalize or shut down. Comprehensive results will be assessed by year’s end, comparing consumption trends before and after the tariff’s introduction.
