Russia’s Mining Ban Strengthens National Power Grid

Russia’s crypto mining bans in several regions saved 300 MW of power and boosted tax revenues, according to the Ministry of Energy. Officials highlight positive effects for the national energy system.

Positive Impact of Mining Restrictions

The ban on cryptocurrency mining in certain Russian regions has already shown significant benefits. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum, Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev said the legislative changes allowed the government to move mining out of the gray zone and better utilize underloaded power plants.

Crypto mining companies have started paying taxes, improving transparency and contributing to the state budget. By halting operations during the autumn-winter season, the government preserved over 300 MW of capacity to cover peak energy demand.

Regions Affected by the Ban

Mining restrictions currently apply to:

  • southern Irkutsk region,
  • Zabaykalsky Krai,
  • Buryatia,
  • the North Caucasus.

The minister emphasized that the bans stabilized electricity supply for socially important facilities and reduced the risk of blackouts.

Outlook for Russia’s Mining Industry

Tsivilev noted that the restrictions target only crypto mining in overloaded grids. The construction of data centers (DCs) remains permitted, as the government intends to support IT infrastructure development and energy sector investments.

In this way, Russia seeks to balance power grid stability with the growth of its digital economy.
