Russia’s Energy Ministry Rules Out New Mining Bans

Russia’s Ministry of Energy has dismissed speculation about a nationwide ban on cryptocurrency mining. Andrey Maksimov, head of the electricity development department, said no new restrictions are currently being considered.

Stable power grid supports mining

Speaking at the annual conference of the “Council of Energy Producers,” Maksimov noted that no governors have submitted proposals to limit mining operations. He emphasized that the national power grid remains stable, with no significant shortages that would justify restrictions.

The official reminded that the possibility of banning mining applies only to specific regions and solely at the request of local authorities. Earlier this year, restrictions were introduced in several energy-deficient areas, including the North Caucasus republics, Buryatia, Zabaykalsky Krai, and parts of southern Irkutsk Oblast.

Regional challenges and outlook

For now, the federal government is focused on regulating rather than prohibiting crypto mining. However, regions facing energy deficits may impose their own restrictions.

Industry experts believe that mining in Russia will continue to expand in areas with abundant electricity. This approach could attract further investment into the sector while ensuring the growth of the country’s digital economy infrastructure.
