Russia Bans Mining in Southern Irkutsk Until 2031

Russia has officially banned cryptocurrency mining in southern Irkutsk due to growing pressure on the power grid. The restriction will remain in effect until March 15, 2031, impacting 21 districts and major cities.

Energy grid risks lead to restrictions

On April 7, the Russian government issued a decree banning crypto mining across parts of Irkutsk.

Governor Igor Kobzev said the mining boom triggered frequent blackouts due to increased electricity demand. Network overloads also prevented new infrastructure from being connected.

Previous ban helped ease power stress

A temporary ban from January to March 2025 showed tangible benefits.

Authorities reported that 320 MW of capacity was freed, saving an estimated 146 billion rubles in generation costs.

Mining allowed with private power

From March 21, mining is only allowed in affected areas if miners use self-generated power.

They also need approval from energy regulators. This conditional approach supports energy stability without entirely blocking crypto operations.
