Novosibirsk Hits 3157MW: A Record in Power Demand

According to the Regional Dispatch Center in Novosibirsk Oblast, the area reached a historical peak power consumption of 3157MW in 2023. Experts note a 9% increase compared to the previous 2020 record, driven by rapid housing developments and logistics centers. Approximately 63% of this demand is concentrated in the city of Novosibirsk.

Analysts point to growing mining projects as a notable factor in this surge. Despite local thermal and hydro plants, the region imports 19% of its electricity from neighboring areas to meet its needs. Observers warn that without grid modernization and additional capacity, continued demand growth—especially in winter—could become problematic.

Local authorities are considering business incentives for more energy-efficient facilities. Plans include distributed generation and renewable sources, but implementation may take years. City officials hope federal subsidies will accelerate major energy projects and reduce capacity shortfalls.
