New Era of Crypto Mining: S21 Dominates as Halving Approaches

The world of cryptocurrency mining is evolving. Recent announcements by major manufacturers indicate a shift to machines operating under 20 J/Th. With the anticipated Bitcoin halving only seven months away, older mining equipment may soon be obsolete, according to FoundryServices.

Foundry Digital LLC illustrated this transition using a comparison of post-halving profitability between the S19 JPro and the more efficient S21 at different power costs. The findings suggest that unless Bitcoin’s price significantly exceeds current expectations, older generation units might struggle to stay profitable. For instance, at a power cost of $0.05 per kWh, an S19 JPro would incur a loss of $5, while an S21 would profit by $83.

This stark contrast in profitability underscores the upcoming challenge for miners. Those clinging to outdated tech might find themselves facing financial difficulties, sparking a potential rush to upgrade to newer, more efficient models.

Crypto miners are advised to strategize early, whether by ordering the latest units or offloading their aging fleets.
