Mining in Irkutsk Region Consumes More Energy Than Irkutsk Hydroelectric Station Produces

According to the government of the Irkutsk region, the electricity consumption by miners has reached 1 GW per year, exceeding the installed capacity of the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station, which is 760 MW. This creates a significant load on the regional power system and raises concerns about the stability of energy supply.

Since 2022, electricity consumption in the region has increased by 20%, largely due to the activities of miners. The southern areas of the region have faced energy deficits, negatively affecting local residents and industries.

Authorities are discussing possible measures to regulate mining, including raising tariffs and restricting miners’ access to cheap electricity.
