Metaplanet rises to fifth-largest corporate BTC holder

Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet has purchased an additional 1,005 BTC for $108 million, increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 13,350 BTC. This acquisition allowed it to surpass mining company Cleanspark (12,502 BTC) and claim the fifth spot among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders. The average purchase price for the new coins was $107,601 per BTC.

At current market prices, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin treasury is valued at over $1.45 billion, while the company has spent around $1.31 billion in total, resulting in a 349% year-to-date yield.

Issuing zero-interest bonds to buy more BTC

To fund new purchases, Metaplanet announced a strategic bond refinancing plan, issuing 30 billion yen ($208 million) in 0% ordinary bonds. Part of the funds will go towards buying back and canceling 1.75 billion yen ($12 million) worth of existing bonds carrying a 0.36% annual interest rate. The remainder will be used to buy more Bitcoin.

According to the company’s disclosure, this effectively secures an interest-free cash float for further Bitcoin accumulation.

Ambitious plans to reach 210,000 BTC by 2027

Earlier in June, Metaplanet revised its accumulation strategy, raising its BTC target to 100,000 coins by 2026 and aiming for 210,000 BTC by 2027. Achieving this would make it the world’s second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder if current standings remain unchanged.

Shares of Metaplanet jumped 9% in Japan on Monday, and the stock has surged more than 350% since the start of 2025, according to Google Finance.
