Metaplanet and Smarter Web invest $100M in Bitcoin

Japan’s Metaplanet and UK’s The Smarter Web Company invested nearly $100M in Bitcoin, boosting their positions among the top corporate BTC holders globally.

Institutional Bitcoin investments and growing corporate reserves

Bitcoin’s price continues to attract institutional investors. This week, Japan’s Metaplanet and the UK’s The Smarter Web Company announced nearly $100 million in BTC purchases, strengthening their positions among the largest public Bitcoin treasury holders.

Metaplanet acquired 518 BTC worth $61.4 million at an average price of $118,519 per coin. The Tokyo-listed firm now holds 18,113 BTC, valued at about $2.15 billion at the current Bitcoin rate, with an average purchase price of $101,911. According to BitcoinTreasuries.NET, Metaplanet ranks sixth worldwide among public companies investing in Bitcoin.

Smarter Web strengthens its BTC market position

The Smarter Web Company, listed in London, purchased 295 BTC for $35.2 million at an average price of $119,412. The acquisition was partly funded by a $10.2 million equity raise and $21 million through a Bitcoin-denominated bond issuance.

As a result, Smarter Web’s corporate Bitcoin holdings rose to 2,395 BTC, acquired at an average price of $110,555 each, totaling $264.8 million. At current market prices, these reserves are worth $284.8 million, giving the company an unrealized gain of approximately $20 million.

Market outlook and potential risks for BTC corporates

In July alone, Smarter Web acquired more than 1,500 BTC, jumping from 36th to 23rd in the global public company rankings. The firm aims to secure a top-20 position among corporate Bitcoin holders soon.

Corporate Bitcoin investments have surpassed $100 billion, with public companies holding 791,662 BTC — nearly 4% of the total circulating supply. However, analysts warn that the growing concentration of BTC in corporate hands could pose systemic risks. Crypto analyst Willy Woo suggested that the US might one day nationalize corporate Bitcoin reserves, similar to the 1971 gold standard exit.
