Marathon Digital Expands with Hydro-Powered Bitcoin Mining in Paraguay

Marathon Digital Holdings is expanding its global footprint with a new renewable energy-powered Bitcoin mining project in Paraguay. This venture represents Marathon’s second international project and its first foray into Latin America. Utilizing the excess hydro energy from the Itaipu Dam, the company aims to bolster the Bitcoin ecosystem sustainably.

The initial phase of the project will see 0.3 EH/s of mining power through seven megawatts of hydro energy, with plans for the full 1.1 EH/s to be operational in 2024. As Marathon prepares to bring its equipment online, it underscores a strategic move to harness Paraguay’s surplus energy, which aligns with their goal of reducing power costs, according to mara

Moreover, this endeavor leverages the 32 terawatt hours of unused energy produced by Paraguay annually, presenting a win-win for both the company and the local energy sector. Fred Thiel, the CEO of Marathon, emphasizes the project’s potential to serve as a benchmark for Bitcoin mining’s beneficial impact on areas with excess power. Through this development, Marathon not only aims to cut its energy expenses but also to increase its reliance on sustainable power sources.

Additionally, the collaboration with Penguin Infrastructure Holding, aimed at unlocking human potential through energy in Paraguay, marks a significant step for Marathon. This project could illustrate the transformative power of Bitcoin mining in utilizing excess energy efficiently, avoiding the need for expensive infrastructure expansions. As Marathon gears up to operationalize the project, the eyes of the industry will undoubtedly be on this innovative approach to mining Bitcoin using renewable energy.
