Maldives to Develop $9B Crypto Hub to Diversify Economy

The Maldives signed a $9 billion deal with Dubai’s MBS Global Investments to build a major blockchain hub in Malé. The project aims to attract foreign investment and reduce economic dependence on tourism.

$9 Billion Deal Targets Blockchain Growth

The Maldivian government has partnered with MBS Global Investments to build a blockchain and crypto hub. The deal, signed on May 4, aims to diversify the economy by tapping into the global digital asset industry.

The hub will be located in Malé, the capital, and is part of efforts to shift away from tourism and fisheries as primary revenue sources.

Maldives International Financial Centre Planned

The project includes a vast development — the Maldives International Financial Centre — covering 830,000 square meters. It’s expected to create up to 16,000 jobs.

Construction is projected to take five years. Notably, the total cost exceeds the Maldives’ annual GDP of $7 billion, highlighting the project’s ambitious scale.

Competing With Global Crypto Hubs

Despite its ambition, the Maldives will face competition from established crypto centers. Cities like Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong have already built strong regulatory and technological foundations.

Dubai has recently integrated blockchain into its land registry through a partnership between DLD and VARA. Hong Kong is home to hundreds of Web3 companies thanks to favorable regulations and its strategic position between East and West.

Meanwhile, Singapore supports crypto through its innovation-friendly policies. The country hosts many exchanges and blockchain firms, strengthening its global crypto profile.
