LAPD Recovers $2.7M in Bitcoin Mining Rigs Stolen at Airport

Bitcoin Mining Equipment Seized After Major Theft at LAX

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced the recovery of $2.7 million in Bitcoin mining machines stolen during a cargo heist at Los Angeles International Airport. The shipment was destined for Hong Kong when it was intercepted by criminals.

On April 22, LAPD arrested Oscar David Borrero-Manchola and Yonaiker Rafael Martinez-Ramos. Authorities identified them as key members of a South American crime syndicate involved in large-scale theft operations across Los Angeles.

$4 Million in Stolen Goods Found in Storage Facilities

During searches in the San Fernando Valley, police discovered $4 million worth of stolen goods, including the missing Bitcoin mining rigs. The equipment was stolen just before being loaded onto a flight.

Additionally, detectives recovered $1.2 million in stolen goods such as tequila, clothing, electronics, and pet supplies. One suspect was released after being charged with receiving stolen property, while the other remains in custody.

Crypto Mining Rigs Remain a Prime Target

The LAPD did not specify the number or model of the seized mining rigs. However, modern Bitcoin miners typically sell for $3,000 to $5,000 each.

This is not the first case of stolen crypto equipment in the U.S. In 2023, LAPD recovered rigs worth $579,000. One of the most notorious incidents occurred in Iceland in 2018, when over 600 mining rigs were stolen and later traced to China.

The investigation is ongoing, with more arrests expected.
