In 2025, Attacks on Bitcoin Holders Break Records

2025 sees a surge in physical attacks on Bitcoin holders. Chainalysis warns the number may double the record set in 2021. The spike is linked to BTC price gains and criminal activity.
Bitcoin price surge fuels rise in violent attacks
According to Chainalysis, there have already been 35 recorded “wrench attacks” in 2025. These crimes involve physical force or threats to force victims to hand over their crypto. It’s close to the 36 total attacks recorded in 2021 — the worst year so far.
Chainalysis links the trend to Bitcoin’s surging price. In spring 2025, BTC hit an all-time high above $122,000. This drew attention not only from investors but also from organized crime groups.
Underreported incidents and organized crime risks
Many of these attacks target individual holders, often through kidnappings, extortion, and home invasions. Chainalysis notes that some victims never report such crimes — either due to fear or loss of hope in justice.
As a result, the real number of incidents could be much higher than what’s captured in public data or datasets like the one maintained by cypherpunk Jameson Lopp.
ETFs and enforcement could reduce risk
Chainalysis suggests that widespread access to ETFs and exchange-traded crypto products may reduce future attacks. These tools allow exposure to Bitcoin without holding the private keys.
Furthermore, the transparency of blockchain — and the ability to freeze stablecoins — can deter would-be attackers.
Consistent law enforcement action, Chainalysis adds, may also help reverse the trend and show that harming people for crypto is a failing strategy.
